Finding the right building to photograph

The State Office Building at Spring Garden and Broad Streets, Philadelphia (CC-BY-SA)

If you follow our suggestion and work through the the WikiProject:NRHP map and tables, you should be able to find the addresses and geographic coordinates of historical sites.

But sometimes it’s just not easy finding the right building. Sometimes they just don’t look like a building on the National Register of Historic Places.  This building from the 1950s had me fooled for over a year.  I took some great photos of a nice white building from the 1890s that you can just see in the lower right hand corner.

Then a colleague at WikiProject:NRHP came along and removed that photo from the list of Philadelphia NRHP sites and left me a shocking note: not THIS building!

Sometimes you just have to keep on trying.

Note that, like several other regulars at WP:NRHP, I donate all the photos that I upload to Wikimedia Commons, including this one, to the public domain. You can give me a credit line if you’d like, but you don’t have to.

I’m not sure why some of the others donate their photos to the public domain, but I feel that these buildings are part of our shared national heritage, and that I shouldn’t pretend to own even a small piece of them.

When you upload your photos during the contest your photos will be automatically licensed CC-BY-SA.  That means that anybody can use them for any reason, but they have to give you a credit line.  You can change the license of your photos to public domain if you’d like.  During the upload process, just select CC0 as the license.  But this is absolutely not needed.  Just stick with the automatic CC-BY-SA and that will be great.

  1. The fastest way is to hit the button at the top that says “Get Started.” It will take you to a page that shows you a map and how to get a free account at Wikimedia Commons. Sign up on Commons, click the state on the map where you like to photograph. On the next page click a county name. At that point everything should be clear (hint – click the button that says “upload photo”).

Also make sure you know what CC-BY-SA means (see the link above).

    That’s about it.

  2. I will do what I can. I like photography and architecture. I just moved to Detroit and I’d like to help. Thanks for the honest, straightforward “Finding the Right Building” blog. It will help alleviate the confusion I now know to expect.

    • The subject of the photo can be anything that is listed by the National Register of Historic Places – see our lists for details of specific places, by clicking the “Get Started” button at the top of the page.

Many different type of objects are listed, including trains, ships, shipwrecks, airplanes, museums, modern skyscrapers, archeological sites, parks, sculptures, the “vistas” of Washington, D.C. (that is, the air above the streets), and, yes, a few natural formations. And historic districts can contain a mix of several of these objects. It all depends on what’s on the lists!

      Hope this helps.

    • Why not? Wikipedia is the website that anybody can edit, and I know some teenagers who regularly make important contributions.

You do have to realize that you are giving up some of your rights under copyright by licensing the photos CC-BY-SA. Please make sure you understand the license before starting. It would be good also to talk with your parents about it first. They should make sure that you know what you’re getting into – but giving away the right for others to use your photos freely probably isn’t that big of a deal to them. If you win a prize, they may have to sign a special release.

Then please get to know what a NRHP site is and how to upload and you’re ready. We’re ready if you are.

  3. I would like to participate but I don’t have an android. I have an IPhone. Do you have an app for that?

    • Right now we only have an Android version. I only have an iPhone, too, and I was sad to not be able to use it. :)

  4. this is the page (see below) I get when I hit the state of Georgia- In other words, i am not geting the link to a county in Georgia (specificaly would like link to Macon ,GA ) to upload pix for contest.

“Wikipedia does not have an article with this exact name. Please search for National Register of Historic Places listings in Georgia (U.S. state) in Wikipedia to check for alternative titles or spellings. Start the National Register of Historic Places listings in Georgia (U.S. state) article, using the Article Wizard if you wish, or add a request for it.
Search for “National Register of Historic Places listings in Georgia (U.S. state)” in existing articles.
Look for pages within Wikipedia that link to this title”.

  5. I uploaded a photo to the commons before I knew it would not be allowed in the contest. I deleted it from the commons so I could put it in the contest. Now I get the another firewall stating this image was deleted. I cant upload this photo to the contest. Any ideas?
On a second note…..I just posted a few photos where photos did not show on the list and I do not see the photos on the list. I uploaded from the button on the list. Does the photo have to be nominated for consideration? I seem to remember reading about this but cant find any info. Thanks in advance.

    • Please leave me a message at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Smallbones and I can check out what has happened under your username (assuming you were logged in). In general, it doesn’t sound like a good idea to delete a file in order to upload it for the contest (if I understood you correctly). As far as files being posted on the county lists, that might take a few days. Experienced editors will check out the photos – see if it matches the description of the site – and pick the “best” photo of the site if there are several uploaded about the same time.

      Hope this helps.

    • We’re part of an international contest, so we’re stuck with our deadline. It’s 6 am Eastern Daylight Time, Monday, October 1, 2012.

Upload as many as you can. You can also upload later without being in the contest. For me, the biggest payoff is not any prize, but seeing my photos in Wikipedia articles. You can win this type of prize anytime. Just keep uploading those photos!

    • $700 for 1st Place in the Best Picture Contest. Other prizes as well. See the “Prizes” tab above.

    • The CC-BY-SA license allows anybody to use your photo as long as they attribute the photo to you. It also allows anybody to modify the photo, as long as they attribute the photo to you without implying that you agree with the modifications. It is a slight exaggeration, though, to say that it “takes all your rights.”

If anybody feels they were misled about this, just leave me a message at my user talk page on Commons and we’ll get the photo deleted.

      • If “allows anybody to use your photo as long as they attribute the photo to you.” isn’t a rights give away I don’t know what else to call it. Giving away photos for a credit line is no honor.

  6. Can multiple pictures of a single building be uploaded? Will all be available/added or is just one chosen for the wiki-page (not the contest, just the existing/future wiki-page).

    • Multiple pictures are welcome. If you are just shooting overview photos of the exterior, there usually isn’t much reason to upload more than 10, but every building is different. If you are shooting interesting details, or interiors, or historic districts, then shoot as many as you think are important.

For articles, it depends on the judgement of the editor. Remember that you can become an editor – Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anybody can edit. For short articles, often there is only one photo, but multiple photos are acceptable if they add anything to the overall article. Galleries and links to the subject’s category on Commons are also fairly common. So there is definitely NO RULE of “Only one photo per building.” Just use your judgement.

On the county lists, there is only one photo per site.
